Highschoolers – please sign up for Car Washes!

Dear 25th Year Highschoolers,
If you are HST age 14 (you will be age 14 or older on Dec. 31, 2019), you are considered an HST highschooler (even if you are still in 8th grade). All HST highschoolers are invited to participate in the highschool events run by HST’s Honor Society.
HST’s Honor Society (THS) 1st event is a fundraiser – 2 Car Washes (Sept. 14 & 21) Since HST must fund-raise all the money for sets, props, costumes *and* all admin expenses….fundraising matters! Please sign up for at least one shift!
Our first car wash is *THIS SATURDAY – Sept. 14 *from *9am to 5pm. * *LOCATION: **Shell Station – 2240 Veirs Mill Rd., Rockville, MD 20851 *
*To Sign-up – click link below & read instructions at end of email.*
www.signupgenius.com/go/8050f4aabaf2aa02-september
*PARENTS:* Generous HST parents who come by to support our teens are greatly appreciated. *Please stop by and get your car washed.* You will be impressed by our student’s enthusiasm and work ethic.
*STUDENTS: *If you cannot work either Saturday, you can still play a very important role in the success of these fundraisers by praying. * In the 17 years that HST has been doing student car washes, I have seen a direct correlation between the prayer support and the financial success of these events.* God loves to bless us, but He does not want us to take Him for granted. Think about how we would feel if our friends/family just assumed we’d always help whenever they need it. We all like to be asked/thanked for our service, so why would we do less for God? Therefore, *p**raying for the success of these car washes is just as important as working.*
Looking forward to seeing old (and new) faces when I stop by to check on supplies. Let’s get this year off to a great start with successful car washes!
Blessings, Mrs. Mullan PS – I apologize for the late notice but we had some confusion with booking the gas station. I was able to get them to release this Saturday back to our group, but we may not have it for next Saturday. So,* if you have a suggestion for an alternate location for the Car Wash on Sat., Sept. 21, please let me know. *
*INSTRUCTIONS:*
– We are* limiting participation to only those student signed up*. Too many workers makes it harder to focus on working. If all the slots are filled for one time slot, please pick a different time. – New HST members who are HST age 14 (by Dec. 31st) are always welcome. – Dress code – modest shorts or pants and an HST tee shirt. *There will be a stash of HST shirts that new HST students can borrow while working. *
– Students need to bring their lunch/drinks (or play to buy snacks at the gas station). HST will provide bottled water. – *You are expected to stay at the gas station, or at your assigned spot for advertising during your entire shift.* This means you need to pack a lunch and/or snacks (water bottles will be provided). Running to buy food across the street or at other nearby restaurants during your shift is not allowed. – Alumni are welcome to stop by to get their car washed but they can’t stay to work/hang-out (this is also true for younger siblings). – Please *help advertise the car wash* to family, friends, neighbors. Your best supporters are people who know you! – After your shift – students are invited to go across the street to McDonalds (and/or Dairy Queen) to eat and hang out. Please bring cash if you plan to do this.

Theatrical Show Info – please vote

Dear 25th Year Theatrical Students,
While we couldn’t announce your show with the rest of the 25th Show Season (because you need to vote on it), I didn’t want you to feel left out. So, I’m going to share a specific idea that I’d like you to consider that would fit well with the 25th celebratory season: *New Year’s Eve*. Since yours is the first show of our 25th Season – it would be fun to have Coffeehouse be an elegant New Year’s Eve celebration that kicks it all off. Those of you whose choose the Improv tract -(actors circulating in the audience, interacting with patrons as well as acting out the (scripted) story that we collaboratively put together) could be dressed formally. Those of you who choose the entertainment tract (doing scenes from shows and dance/song on the stage to entertain the patrons) have a good focus for why entertainment is being provided (waiting for the midnight countdown) and there is an easy reason to have the backstage actors come out and join in the finale which would be the “countdown” to the new year and a finale song with everyone singing, “Old Lang Syne”.
Now, I should explain that how Theatricals picks their theme was already going to be different that how Travel Troupe picked the theme, because with the new format, we need to get moving right away on script writing (for improv tract) and scene casting (for entertainment tract). So, instead of taking a full class to brainstorm ideas from students – discussing what’s realistic – and eventually voting, Theatricals will have a couple themes presented to them on the first class to pick between. This is necessary because the director needs to start the year having already done research on what scripted scenes could work well with the theme. So, *if you want, we’ll continue to brainstorm to come up with a 2nd possible theme that would fit well with our 25th Anniversary,* but if you like the New Year’s Eve idea – please vote for it via email (if we get a majority vote for this theme, it will save us some additional time). We are super excited about our new 2-tract structure for Theatricals and are anxious to hit the ground running!
Also, you will be getting an email this week with info about your Go Ape adventure and your class list. You will be asked to pick which tract you wish to be in this year (Improv/Audience or Entertainment). In addition, returning Theatrical students will be asked if they wish to participate in the Director training program (this is only open to returning members). So, start thinking about your goals for this year. It’s time for the creative process to begin! Blessings, Mrs. Mullan

Reminder – Registration Closes Sept. 1

Dear 25th Year HST Families,
HST’s registration will close on September 1.
If you were planning on adding registering for a dance class or tech class – please be sure to get that done by Monday, Sept. 1, before midnight.
All of our classes have enough people to run. Some dance classes are extra large and will be split, but both classes will meet at the same time.
Blessings, Marilyn

Looking for a few more NYC attendees

Dear 25th Year HST Families,
I’m sorry to keep emailing about this trip, but we’ve had a flurry of people interested at the last minute.
In order to not turn people away, *we are going with two smaller buses instead of one large bus.* We just need a few more people to get to break-even point.
Please email ASAP if you are interested. The max we can take is 10 more people. Blessings, Marilyn

Why I love our NYC Trip

Dear 25th Anniversary HST Families,
Due to my broken ankle, surgery, and slow recovery, I haven’t really “pitched” our NYC Anniversary Trip. Yes, we sent out the facts a month ago, but I didn’t tell families why this trip is so special. In my better-late-than-never philosophy, I’m going to share these thoughts now in the hopes that we’ll have enough additional interest to fill the bus! (You must email by Monday).
– NYC is magical at Christmas time. There is always high-energy on NYC streets, but during the holidays it is electric! The city does an awesome job of decorating and of course the Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center is iconic. – Bryant Park is a mini-Christmas village with Ice Skating in the center and little shops/restaurants all around. * It is located directly behind the amazing NYC Public Library*. Both are possible stops along our path, providing charming ambiance in the park and breath-taking awe at the sheer magnitude of the library. – The animated Christmas windows in many of NYC stores (including Macy’s) are both nostalgic and amazing. NYC is one of the few cities that holds onto this wonderful tradition. The stores that participate start planning their Christmas windows on Jan. 2, spending a full year with top notch artists and/or technical gurus to provide these unique treasures. (HST provides a walking tour map to show where these windows are located so you can enjoy all of them as you walk to your final destination of Radio City Music Hall.) – Radio City Music Hall is a theater that everyone should tour and attend at some point in their lives. The tour provides amazing insight into it’s massive back-stage/under-stage, as well as the hydraulic lifts that bring the stage floor up from below (technology this theater pioneered even before the US Navy used for it for its air craft carriers!). This theater has a very rich history and is stunning in it’s full glory. It’s one of the best tours I’ve ever been on (plus you’ll get to meet some Rockettes!) – The Rockettes are a precision dance company that every dancer should see live. Their performances set the standard for perfect synchronization. No matter how many times I get to watch them, I am always amazed. – The Rockettes’ Christmas Spectacular Show is truly “spectacular. ” It uses amazing technology (their 3D images that fly above the audiences’ heads are awesome!), as well as retells the classic Christmas story of Baby Jesus’s birth (complete with live animals!). *HST’s seats are side-orchestra seats to ensure you soak in every amazing detail. * – New Year’s Even in Times Square is something the entire world watches. Being in Times Square on the 30th is way to participate in this world-famous celebration without dealing with a million other people! We will be able to see them test drop of “the ball” at noon,a s well as see them setting up the stages & barriers. – New York pizza is the best (my opinion) and it is awesome to finish our day on the bus with this classic treat.
Finally, my personal favorite reason for cherishing this trip is that it is an opportunity to teach the next generation of young adults that they CAN navigate a new situation. They do not do this alone. They do it by supporting each other as a team. Students are asked to use part of their travel time to NYC to answer a questionnaire about their goals for the day. Then, they are asked to work with their small group to come up with a group plan for the day. They will find themselves faced with the challenge of compromising in order to come up with a realistic plan for where their group will stop, how long they can spend at each stop, and what/when they will eat (the small groups are not allowed to split up). In the end, this day trip will teach students more about leadership and team-work than most curriculum could teach in a year!
So, if you haven’t thought about this trip for your student (or yourself!), you might want to take a minute to discuss it. In the past, some students have asked for this trip to be their one Christmas present. If your students is so inclined, you can be assured that it will be a gift they’ll never forget!
Blessings, Marilyn
PS – Details, cost, and forms are in a previously sent email.

We need at least one bus for NYC

Dear HST Families,
I am going to trust that God will fill at least one bus so that the people who have registered can attend. The question is which size bus?
So – I need an email by Monday to let me know if your student and/or you are attending. *We will ask you to follow up with forms and checks,* but right now I just need to know how many tickets to turn back in (so we don’t get charged).
*I will resend my info email about the trip* as well as another email with my Top 10 Reasons for loving this Anniversary event.
Blessings, Marilyn
Here are the* people who have already signed up *(since I know that sometimes is a factor for students deciding to go).
