Praise Report – HST got 24 NEW mics delivered today!!
Dear 25th Year HST Families,
With all the stress and worry, I think it is just like God to give us a wonderful praise report to remind us of His meticulous care. So, let me tell you the tale of HST’s replacement microphones.
As you know, we held a major fundraising campaign this year to replace our 16 oldest microphones. We estimated that we needed to raise $15,000 above the annual fundraising goal of $20,000 (so a total of $35,000). To help reach this challenging goal we also applied for a $5000 grant from a local Foundation that I felt we were very good candidates for.
So, how did the fundraising go? At first, not great. Our Car Wash total and Silent Auction total were less than previous years and there weren’t many donations in the fall. One of our students even set up a GoFundMe page, but it wasn’t bringing in much. Then in December I suspected that we did not get the grant because we had not been notified. I was quite discouraged but I decided to call the Foundation and they told me that all their grants had gone to homeless and hunger needs. That immediately put our problems in perspective, so I went back to God and said, “God if you want us to have these mics, you will figure out a way to fund them.” Within the hour, I got an email from Anthony Grancagnolo who set up the GoFundMe page, saying that we had received a $5000 anonymous donation! All I could do is cry because it was so clear that God was saying, “I’ve got this. I’ve always taken care of HST and I’m not going to stop now.”
After that, donations just seemed to come rolling in. We hit our goal and then surpassed it (by just about the same amount as our higher copyright and sets/props/costume costs). So, things were looking up – until we found out that our worst fear had happened. The government IS taking more band-width out of public domain and our 8 newer microphones are in the bandwidth that is now illegal to use. So we now need to buy *24* microphones instead of 16. Discouraging – yes – until we found out that the manufacturer will give us $100 a piece for each of our microphones in the illegal bandwidth. That could mean getting $2400 back – which mostly covers the cost of those extra 8 mics! Add to this the fact that Music and Arts gave us their wholesale price…and the total cost was LESS than $15,000 for *24* new microphones!!
So, as I sit here praying about the fact that it is going to take a bit of miracle for us to get to perform our shows, I keep looking at this stack of new microphones to remind myself that God’s got this. Blessings, Marilyn
Prayer Focus for HST
Dear 25th Year HST Families,
First, I would like to ask for prayers that God will send His Holy Spirit to calm the current situation so that *decisions can be made with prudence, not panic*. Please remember that fear never comes from God. Perfect faith has no fear.
Second, *I wish to take some of the drama out of the dramatic events going on.* T*his pandemic is a flu – not the plague*. Most people who get corona virus will not get any sicker than if they had a regular flu. That said, senior citizens and people with compromised immune systems are at greater risk (as they are with regular flu). *Right now there are 12 confirmed cases in the STATE which has 6.043 MILLION people*. I am not judging the decisions being made to stop the spread of this virus, but I do not want to jump on the panic wagon.
Conclusion – HST is holding all rehearsals/classes tomorrow. *We will take the following precautions:*
– Since it is supposed to be a lovely 70 degrees, *students who eat lunch at Redland will eat outside.* – *We will open windows in all rooms*. If the rooms get cold, students may wear their jackets (*we will waive the “only HST Hoodie” policy for tomorrow)*. – We will *modify check-in and sign out so that it is done in each class/troupe* (there will be a clipboard in the room). *All students will be allowed to sign themselves out* before they leave their last class of the day. – This will allow students to go directly to their class/rehearsal space, limiting the # of people they come in contact with.
We will still have parents meeting at my home to sew tomorrow and Saturday as well as set building in my yard. Again – there is plenty of soap for washing hands and I love having my windows open. *This is HST’s “crunch” time,* so* we need to continue working efficiently so that we will be able to adapt as needed for our show season. *
The witness that parents can give in this situation is to model trust. *Faith is easy when everything is going well, but what about when things are uncertain*? *Can we have faith that God will protect us? * YES, we can.
Let me give you an example of God’s protection.
– Eight years ago we had 3 families out of 100 get lice right before we were going into the theater for Showcase. That show has over 500 costumes – which are stacked and hung right next to each other, making contamination seem impossible to avoid. The City of Rockville considered shutting us down. However, we had put such prudent procedures in place that they were reassured there would not be an “epidemic” and, in fact, there was ZERO spreading during that show or the subsequent 4 shows. Were we prudent? Yes. Did we work hard to put safety procedures in place? Yes. Will we do this same this year – absolutely.
I do not know what next week holds but I promise I will be prayerfully seeking God’s guidance (and I will greatly appreciate your prayers for my discernment). We can only deal with today – and today we are planning to hold classes tomorrow.
Finally, *if you have a student who is immune compromised and your discernment is to keep them home, there will not be a fine*. However, *we would appreciate being notified ASAP.*
Blessings, Marilyn
Financial Collection for Ms. Steffi
Dear 25th Year HST Families,
Our Shakespeare Director, Ms. Steffi Phelan, has been undergoing a bone marrow transplant for the last couple months. *I THANK YOU for your prayers, as this was/is a high-risk procedure*. * Even though her immune system is depleted she is determined to return to HST and finish out the year.* She was able to attend last week with a mask and with her students adhering to careful hand washing before coming into the rehearsal room. *Please continue to pray for Ms. Steffi’s full recovery. ** It would be wonderful if this treatment would successfully rid her of the aggressive leukemia that she has been battling for over a year. *
Ms. Steffi is a professional singer, actress, teacher, and director. She supports herself by working a wide variety of jobs. However, her illness required that she drop all her other jobs (except HST), which means she’s had a greatly reduced income. We’d like to help Ms. Steffi recover some of her lost income by accepting cash donations this week and next. . *There will be a small container on the check-in table tomorrow for your donations. **We prefer cash but will accept checks made out to HST. **We will then cash the checks because **we’d like everyone’s charity to be anonymous. *Like our Christmas baskets, the final sum will come “From Your HST Family.” This will enable families and students to feel comfortable giving small amounts. * It isn’t the quantity that matters, it is the caring that has the most impact. *
My personal thanks, in advance, for being such a loving, caring community. Blessings, Marilyn

Showcase Seat Assignment & Finale Groups
Dear 25th Anniversary Showcase Families,
When we get to Showcase week your student will need to know where their seat assignment is and what their Finale number is.
Finale Choreography will come out in a couple weeks. For now we want everyone focusing on polishing their dance choreography, songs, and scenes.
Blessings, Marilyn
Showcase Scripts
Dear 25th Year Showcase Performers,
Since dancers/choir never get to watch the acting scenes from the audience (due to the tight schedule for getting this show up), I was asked to send out the script to all performers for those who would like to read them. This year the scenes do not tell a continuous story. The only thing that connects them is the number 25.
Blessings, Mrs. Mullan
Showcase Details, Details, Details & Order of Show
Dear 25th Year Showcase Performers,
Attached is “Details, Details, Details” document that you want to print up and post to your refrigerator so you can refer to it during show week.
*ALL families should print/post because times shift from year to year.*
Additionally, the Order of Show is attached so you can see where your student(s) are performing.
Blessings, Mrs. Mullan
